Rice senior safety Andrew Sendejo has been named to the Conference USA Preseason All Conference team as selected in a vote of the league's 12 head football coaches. The results of the voting were announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Sendejo enters his final campaign as the national career active leader with 171 solo tackles and also ranks in the top 10 among active players in total tackles (254), interceptions (8) and interception returns for touchdowns (2). He needs 25 tackles to crack the career top 10 at Rice, while his eight interceptions are tied for ninth on the Owls' career chart.
In 2008, he led the Texas Bowl Champions with 94 tackles despite missing nearly three full games with a high ankle sprain. He ranked fifth in C-USA stats with 8.55 tackles per game (51st nationally) and was 22nd in NCAA stats with 5.4 solo tackles per game. He was an honorable mention All C-USA selection by the league coaches.
Has been responsible for 17 of the Owls' 58 turnovers since the start of 2007 (eight interceptions, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one pass deflection that was intercepted) and leads the team with nine career double-figure tackle games.
Sendejo has been a starter in the Rice defensive backfield since making his collegiate debut vs. Houston in 2006 and has been honored by his teammates as both a sophomore and junior as a team captain. He is also a two-time ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA District VI academic honoree with a 3.59 GPA in Sports Management.
Sendejo and his Rice Owl teammates will report for the start of drills on Friday, August 7, with the first practice set for Saturday, August 8. The Owls will open their 2009 season on the road when they meet UAB in Birmingham, Alabama on September 5. The Owls home opener will be September 26 when they host Vanderbilt.
