Rice junior Bruno Rosa earned a return trip to the round of 32 at the NCAA Men's Single Championships after toppling the #8 national seed in straight sets at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Rosa downed Robert Farah of USC, who had led Trojans to the NCAA team title on Monday night, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). The pair battled to a draw through the first 10 games of the first set before Rosa broke serve to gain the advantage. Rosa scored an early break in the second set, but Farah charged back to take a 6-5 lead in the second set before Rosa battled back to send the set to a tie-break. In the tie-break, Rosa fell behind 3-1, but came back to score the last three points and clinch the win.
"Obviously, it was a very good match," Rosa said. "He is a very dangerous player. He's played well the whole season, and for his career, and just won the national championship. He is obviously a really great player and confident. At the beginning of the match, I felt that if I could play as hard as I could the whole match, I could expect him to fall down, because he was a little tired from yesterday. I'm happy I succeeded."
Rosa moves on to face Clint Bowles of Florida State, who defeated Rosa 6-4, 6-4 in a dual match between the Owls and Seminoles in February. The two will meet for a shot at the round of 16 at approximately 1 pm.
In the Owls other match in the first round, senior Christoph Müller fell to Sanam Singh of Virginia in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).
