The Rice women's tennis team ran into a 34th ranked Washington squad looking to bounce back from an upset loss, and the Huskies took it out on the Owls, sweeping the match, 7-0 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the Washington campus on Sunday morning.
The Huskies, who fell to 40th ranked Sacramento State on Friday, did not lose a set on the afternoon, taking all three doubles matches and all six singles events. The doubles matches opened evenly with each team holding serve early, but the Huskies broke through midway through the matches and went on to take all three by 8-5 scores.
"We were out competed by Washington today," Owls head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "I am confident we will learn from this match and am looking forward to hitting the practice court on Tuesday. We have another busy week of tennis ahead of us as we play at home on Wednesday and then head to the Midwest for spring break," she added.
The Owls will be back on the court on Wednesday when they host Lee College in a 2 pm match at the Hess Tennis Stadium.
