Rice seniors Andrew Sendejo and Clark Fangmeier, along with sophomore Travis Bradshaw are among 14 student-athletes who have been named to the 2009 Conference USA All Academic Football, the conference office announced on Thursday.
Rice and UTEP led the way with three selections each to the team, which is selected in a vote of conference Sports Information Directors. The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on their team.
Sendejo was selected to the team for the third consecutive year. He owns a 3.55 GPA as a sports management major and a business minor and was also a three-time selection to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI first-team. Sendejo was tied for sixth in the nation with 6.4 unassisted tackles per game before suffering a season-ending injury at ECU and was the NCAA career active leader with 216 solo tackles before he was hurt. He is one of 12 finalist for the 2009 Wuerfell Trophy, which honors the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academic and athletic achievement.
Bradshaw is a two-time ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI, first team selection and carries a 3.37 GPA in chemical engineering. On the field he is the NCAA leader with 7.50 unassisted tackles per game (90 total) and is tied for second in C-USA with four forced fumbles. He moved into a tie for 8th on the Rice season tackle list with 11 stops vs. Houston to give him 121 this year. The 11-tackle effort vs. the Cougars was his sixth consecutive double-figure tackle game and seventh overall this year and his 12th in 18 career starts.
Fangmeier carries a 3.37 GPA in Mathematical Economic Analysis and finished his career as Rice's kick scoring leader with 266 points, which ranks second only to Jarett Dillard in school history. He ranks second on the C-USA career chart and is 17th on the NCAA career list with 179 career PATs.
