Ross and Gaines Named to Rivals C-USA Freshman Squad

Rice running back Charles Ross and cornerback Phillip Gaines have been honored by Rivals.com as members of their Conference USA All-Freshman Team.

Ross led all C-USA freshmen with 11 rushing touchdowns and led the Owls with 491 yards rushing. He is first true freshman to lead Rice in rushing since Trevor Cobb in 1989. He closed out his freshman year by topping 100 yards rushing for the first time, finishing with 105 yards against Houston.
Gaines worked his way into the starting lineup by the third week of the season and made a total of five starts at corner. He suffered a broken wrist against Navy, but played with a cast the next two weeks and returned to the starting lineup at SMU. He suffered a second injury in the game vs. the Mustangs and missed the final three games of the year. He finished the season with 31 tackles to finish second on the team among cornerbacks.
