- Rice captains for the UTEP game were the members of the 2009 senior class, represented by John Thomas Shepherd, John Welch, Travis Mason and Chance Talber. Rice won the toss and chose to receive, UTEP defended the south goal. Rice is 13-4 since 2006 since the first of November. They were 4-1 in 2006, 2-2 in 2007, 5-0 in 2008 and 2-1 this year.
- Toren Dixon's 4th quarter reception extended his streak to 37h consecutive game with a catch and was the 158th of his career, moving him past James Casey into third on the Rice career list. He is currently tied with Dan Cunningham for 7th on the Rice season reception list with 57. James Sykes is 6th with 76 in 1976. With his touchdown reception, he moved into a tie for third with James Casey with 17 career TD receptions and tied for 6th on the season list with 7. Kenneth Roy is 5th with nine in 1976. With two TD receptions he'd move into a tie for second with David Houser with 18.
- Cheta Ozougwu's first-quarter sack gave him sacks in three consecutive games and his fifth consecutive game with a tackle for loss. He finished the day with two sacks, the first multi-sack game of his career. He has set a career high for tackles for loss and sacks this year and currently has 10.5 TFL along with 5.5. Scott Solomon was credited with two tackles for loss on the day to move his career total to 30.5, becoming the 8th player in school history to top 30 career tackles for loss.
- Justin Hill finished the day with a career-best eight tackles. His previous high was five tackles vs. Houston.
- Tyler Smith rushed for a career-high 127 yards on 23 carries. His previous best was 49 yards at Texas Tech this year. He scored the first touchdown of his career on a 12-yard run in the third quarter.
- Smith's 100-yard rushing game marked the Owls' first since C.J. Ugokwe carried the ball 18 times for 110 yards in last year's win over Houston. That game was also the Owls' last home contest of the season.
- Travis Bradshaw was credited 13 with tackles, extending his streak of five consecutive games in double figures. He topped 100 tackles for the season and has 110 stops heading into next week's finale at Houston. He has six double figure games this season and 11 career double figure tackle games in 17 career starts and he is averaging 10 tackles in his 17 career starts. (164 total coming in).
- Clark Fangmeier' first PATs allowed him to move past Derek Schmidt (1984-87) and Xavier Beitia, (2001--04) both of Florida St. for 18th on the NCAA career list and now has 177. Carlos Huerta of Miami (1988-91) is 17th with 178. With six points today, he has moved past Trevor Cobb (260 points) into second on the Rice career scoring list with 264 at this time. His field goal in the second quarter was his eighth this year, matching his career-high set in 2006.
