AUGUSTA, Ga. - Rice sophomore Kyle Martens was named a candidate for the 2009 Ray Guy Award, which identifies the nation's top collegiate punter. The list, announced Friday by the Augusta Sports Council, will be narrowed to ten semifinalists on Nov. 13.
Martens is averaging 43.39 yards per punt this season. Of his 46 punts, nine have been downed inside opponents' 20-yard line while 12 have been 50 yards or more. Martens ranks 19th in punting average according to the NCAA's latest Football Bowl Subdivision statistical rankings.
Following next month's semi-finalist announcement, a national body of FBS sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists, and ultimately the winner. The winner will be announced live during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show airing on ESPN Dec. 10.
Rice University has an open date this week. The Owls return to action next Saturday when they travel to SMU.
