Nusslein Advances to ITA Regional Quarterfinals

COLLEGE STATION - Rice Unviersity's Michael Nusslein defeated two seeded players on Sunday to advance to the ITA Texas Regional's quarterfinal round. Nusslein will take on the tournament's No. 1 seed, Texas' Dimitar Kutrovsky Monday at 9 a.m.
On Sunday, Nusslein posted a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 5 seed Slah Mbarek of TCU then knocked off one of the tournament's No. 9 seeds, Rafeal Garcia of Texas Tech 6-4, 7-6.
Rice had five players advance to the Round of 32 but Nusslein was one of only two Owls to advance to the quarterfinals. Teammate Bruno Rosa, the tournament's No. 2 seed, defeated TCU's Zach Nichols 7-6, 6-3 before falling in the quarterfinals to SMU's Artem Baradach 6-4, 6-2.
Also advancing to the Round of 32 for the Owls were Dennis Polyakov, Sam Garforth-Bles and Oscar Podlewski.
Polyakov lost to No. 8 seed Alexey Grigorov of Texas A&M 6-3, 6-3. Garforth-Bles dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar. Podlewski was defeated by TCU's Emmanuel Brighiu 6-1, 6-4.
Nusslein teamed with Christian Saravia to advance to the Round of 16 of doubles play but lost an 8-4 decision to Texas Tech's Garcia and Raony Carvalho Sunday afternoon.
In the R2C consolation bracket, Rice's Isamu Tachibana won a pair of matches Sunday to advance to quarterfinal play Monday morning. Tachibana defeated Prairie View's Ronald Chidzikwe 6-0, 6-0 then posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over SMU's Brian Griffin.
Tachibana plays Tyler Brown of UTSA Monday morning at 9 a.m.
Also in the R2C, Saravia defeated Texas-Arlington's Giacomo Sano 6-4, 6-1 before losing to Marcus Lunt of Texas A&M 6-7, 6-3 (1-0). Rice's Andy Wang defeated Texas A&M's Calon Alpar 6-1, 1-6 (1-0) before losing to UTSA's Martin Ayala.
