Owls Have Five Singles Players Advance

COLLEGE STATION - Rice had five players, including the tournament's No. 2 seed, Bruno Rosa, advance Saturday at the ITA Texas Regional being played at Texas A&M. The Owl quintet will be back on the court during the 10 o'clock hour Sunday morning for Round of 32 matches.
Rosa, who had a first-round bye, defeated Lamar's Richard Fikuka 6-0, 6-3 in the Round of 64. He will take on TCU's Zach Nichols Sunday morning.
Dennis Polyakov defeated Texas-Arlington's David Subiratsa 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the Round of 32 to take on Texas A&M's Alexey Grigorov. Michael Nusslein posted wins over Texas Tech's David Gonzalez 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 and Baylor's Marcus Horny 7-5, 7-6 (5). He will meet the tournament's No. 5 seed, TCU's Siah Mbarek.
Sam Garforth-Bles posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Texas-Pan American's Beau Bernstein and will take on one of the tournament's No. 9 seeds, Gonzalo Escobar, Sunday morning. Oscar Podlewski will face TCU's Emmanuel Brighiuafter after posting a 6-3, 7-5 win over Texas A&M's Marcus D. Lunt.
In other first-round action Saturday, Jonathan Chang defeated UTPA's Marcus Dornauf 6-2, 6-4 before dropping a 6-3, 7-6 (6) decision to Texas' Vasil Miadenov in the Round of 64. Isamu Tachibana defeated UTPA's Nirvik Mohinta 6-1, 6-1 before falling 7-5, 6-1 to another of the tournament's No. 9 seeds, Texas' Joshua Zavala.
Also on Saturday, Christian Saravia dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Texas' Ed Corrie in the round of 64 while Vishnu Rajam was defeated by SMU's Bryan Griffin 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 in the opening round. Andy Wang suffered a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 loss to Texas Tech's Andre Stabile in the Round of 64.
In doubles play, Nusslein and Saravia will meet Texas Tech's Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia in the Round of 16 Sunday afternoon following an 8-1 win over TCU's Marius Cirstea and Cameron Nash Saturday.
The regional continues through Tuesday.
