Freshman Jessica Jackson ran her season record to 3-0, but the 16th-ranked Texas Longhorns proved too deep for the 68th-ranked Rice Owls, defeating them 6-1 in a women's tennis match at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin.
"It was a tough day for us," Owls head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We had our chances, but Texas played the big points better. This is something we can learn from and I am sure the girls are ready to get back out there tomorrow," she added. The Owls will host Sam Houston in an 1:30 match on Sunday at Jack Hess Tennis Stadium at Rice.
Jackson defeated Stephanie Davison by scores of 7-5 and 6-4 to capture the Owls point on the day. "It was a great win for Jessica," Schmidt noted. "She executed her game plan very well."
Sophomore Varsha Shiva-Shankar was the only other Owl to win a set, extending her match to three sets in#5 singles, before falling to Maggie Mello 6-3. 3-6. 6-3.
