Rice junior safety Andrew Sendejo has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Owls 56-27 win over SMU. The announcement was made by the conference office.
He joins a pair of East Carolina players, Patrick Pinkney and T.J. Lee who were honored for their efforts in the Pirates win over Virginia Tech.
Sendejo set up a pair of Rice touchdowns in a 28-point third quarter outburst to put the game away vs. SMU. He intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown, the second of his career and both have come against SMU. Sendejo then picked up a fumble and returned it 34 yards to set up the Owls final touchdown of the game. He also had four tackles and was credited with breaking up a second pass.
This is the second time Sendejo has been honored by the conference for his performance in a game. He was earned the weekly honor last year after picking off a pair of passes in the Owls 31-29 win at Southern Miss.
