Rice's James Casey has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Owls' 56-42 victory over Houston last Saturday. The win allowed Rice (9-3) to reach nine wins for the first time since 1953 and to grab a share of the C-USA West Division title with a 7-1 conference record.
This is the third time this season that the sophomore from Azle has won the weekly award. Casey was honored along with Southern Miss linebacker Gerald McGrath and UAB K/P Swayze Waters for their efforts last Saturday.
Casey broke the Conference USA season reception mark after catching 12 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns against the Cougars. It was his third 12-catch game this season and ran his season total to 104, three better than Arnold Jackson of Louisville caught in 1999. Casey also ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass to Taylor Wardlow, to give him two games this season in which he has run, thrown and caught a touchdown in the same game.
He currently is second in the NCAA with 104 catches and an average of 8.7 catches per game. He ranks fifth with 1,217 receiving yards and seventh with 101.4 receiving yards per game.
The Owls are off this week to prepare for final exams while also waiting to learn which bowl game will be their holiday destination.
