Rice sophomore receiver James Casey has been named a 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America for football, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Wednesday.
Casey was named to the Academic All-American second team after compiling a 3,84 GPA with a triple major in Economics, Managerial Studies and Sports Management. The sophomore from Azle has averaged 18 hours a semester since enrolling at Rice in January, 2007.
He is the first Rice football player to be honored by CoSIDA since Travis Ortega in 2000.
Heading into Saturday's battle with Houston, Casey has already set a Rice single-season record with 92 receptions and ranks second in the nation with an average of 8.4 receptions per game. He is the second Rice player to top 1,000 yards in receiving and he has teamed with Jarett Dillard to give the Owls a pair of 1,000-yard receivers this season.
He has twice been honored by C-USA as its Offensive Player of the Week, including his school-record 208-yard receiving effort vs. Memphis.
