PROVO, Utah - Cory Pflieger scored a game-high 14 points while Rodney Foster finished with 11 points and seven assists as Rice knocked off North Florida, 68-46, during the final day of the Basketball Travelers Invitational.
With Saturday's win on the campus of Brigham Young University, Rice finished with a 2-1 record at the tournament and evened its record for the year to 2-2. The Owls return to action Tuesday when they play host to Lamar in Tudor Fieldhouse. North Florida fell to 0-4 with the loss.
Rice never trailed in the game as Pflieger opened scoring with a three-pointer, the first of four on the night. The junior guard also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals during the game.
The Owls' first double-digit lead came on a Connor Frizzelle three-pointer which gave Rice a 16-6 lead with 11:47 left in the first half and the team went on to lead by as many as 17 points in the first half.
A late run by UNF cut into the Owls' advantage. UNF outscored the Owls 8-4 after the final official's timeout of the first half which came at the 3:50 mark. UNF's run was capped by a Stan Januska steal which led to a Cameron Lovelace jumper with seven seconds on the clock that cut Rice's lead to 34-21 at intermission.
To start the second half, both teams struggled shooting. Rice made just one of its first six field goal attempts. The Owls were able to finally get some momentum as Lucas Kuipers connected on a 15-foot jumper. On the Owls' next possession Kuipers passed up a three-point shot attempt at the top of the key and found Foster on the wing for a trey that was part of a 12-0 run to start the second period.
North Florida missed its first eight field goal attempts of the second half before Cortez Riley gathered his own missed shot and was fouled while scoring from the paint. His basket coming with 12:11 to play accounted for the Ospreys' first points of the second period.
Rice held UNF to 32 percent shooting. Cortez scored a team-leading 12 points on 5-for-15 shooting while Lovelace finished with 11.
Once again Aleks Perka was the Owls' leading rebounder. He had eight boards. Trey Stanton finished with seven rebounds. Both players scored six points apiece.
Bryan Beasley added nine points for Rice while Lucas Kuipers was 4-for-4 from the field and finished with eight points to go along with three rebounds.
The Olws shot 47 percent from the field and made 11-of-32 three-pointers. The 11 treys equaled a season high as well as equaled the eighth-best three-point performance in school history.
