HOUSTON - Jay Brown scored a career-high 22 points and pulled down 18 rebounds and his Lamar team held Rice to a season-low 29 percent shooting night as the Cardinals posted a 61-53 win in Tudor Fieldhouse here Tuesday.
Brown was one of four Lamar starters to score in double figures. Brandon McThay added 12 points, including a pair of second-half three-pointers that would each extend the Cards' lead to double figures, and the 5-11 guard also grabbed eight rebounds. Kenny Dawkins added 12 points and Tristan Worrell finished with 10 points and seven boards.
Lamar enjoyed a 31-23 lead at halftime, scoring the period's final five points. Brown hit his second of two three-pointers from the top of the key and a Coy Custer layup before the horn gave the Cardinals an eight-point, second-half lead.
With just over 12 minutes to play, Rice would cut Lamar's lead to five.
Bryan Beasley converted a three-point play after a steal by Connor Frizzelle, and Cory Pflieger would come up with a steal on the Cardinals' next offensive possession and Frizzelle made two at the line. Frizzelle's free throws knarrowed Lamar's lead to 41-36 with 12:08 to play but from that point, the Cards would run their lead to as many as 15 points with a 15-5 rally.
Rice did manage one more rally, cutting the lead to seven, 60-53, on a Frizzelle layin with 47 seconds to play with 47 seconds to play. A Dawkins turnover gave the Owls a chance to make it a two-possession game, but Bryan Beasley missed a three-point attempt and a McThay free throw with 24 seconds left gave Lamar a 61-53 lead.
Frizzelle, a freshman on this year's Rice team, set an early career scoring standard with 18 points. Senior forward Aleks Perka recorded his first double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
With the win, Lamar improved to 4-0 and returns to home to take on Lyon College Saturday. Rice, now 2-3, plays at Texas Sunday.
