The Rice Owls women's cross country squad placed eighth out of 41 teams in the Blue Race at the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind. The Owls totaled 263 points in beating two nationally ranked teams ahead of them.
Rice, ranked 24th in the nation, defeated No. 18 N.C. State who placed 32nd and No. 21 Providence who finished 11th.
"We ran really well with three runners placing in the top 25 which we have not accomplished at this meet," commented Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "Becky Wade, in her first competition, ran a gutsy race after only training for two weeks. I certainly do think that the future bodes well if we are able to stay healthy."
Earning top 25 finishes for Rice were Nicole Mericle placing 19th (20:47.6), Lennie Waite was 20th (20:51.5), and Allison Pye finished 24th with a time of 20:53.5.
"I thought that the team performed exceedingly well today on a big national stage," concluded Bevan.
Rice now prepares for the Conference USA championship on Nov. 1 at Memphis, Tenn.
