TULSA, Okla. - No. 14 seed Bruno Rosa dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Virginia's Michael Shabaz in the Round of 16 Friday at the D'Novo ITA All-American. The event is being played at the Michael Case Tennis Center on the Tulsa campus.
Rosa rebounded from a rough start and traded breaks with Shabaz at 3-3 in the second set. Ahead 5-4, Shabaz took advantage of a loose service game from Rosa to close out the match.
"Bruno didn't have the intensity and effort that he normally has," assistant coach Efe Ustundag said. "It's too tough at this level to come back from that slow of start. It's a disapointing exit, but Bruno is the type of player that will learn from this."
In consolation doubles, Rosa and Christoph Müller edged No. 3 seed Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico of Texas. The Rice pair went up an early break and didn't drop serve to hold on for the 8-5 victory.
The duo is slated to play Oklahoma State's Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov in the backdraw semifinals Saturday after 2pm.
