DALLAS -- Rice baseball player Joe Savery and University of Houston sprinter Ebonie Floyd were named the male and female 2006-07 Conference USA Athletes of the Year, league commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Wednesday (June 11). Savery is the third baseball player to win in the four-year history of the award, while Floyd is the first member of a track and field squad to earn the C-USA honor.
Savery, a pitcher and first baseman, shined as one of the top two-way performers in the country this season, earning consensus first team All-America honors. Savery, the 2007 Player of the Year for C-USA baseball, was among the four finalists for the 2007 Dick Howser Trophy given to college baseball's top player. He led the Owls in batting average (.356), hits (98) and total bases (139), and had 19 doubles, six home runs and 60 RBI in 70 games played. In working double-duty on the mound, the Houston native from nearby Lamar High School tied for the C-USA lead in victories, with an 11-1 record, a 2.99 ERA and 61 strikeouts to go along with an opponents' batting average of .242. He was selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft last month and was the 19th player selected overall. Savery's versatile talents helped earn Rice a second straight trip to the College World Series where the team finished third in the nation.
Floyd capped off her UH career by earning All-America status at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The sprint specialist won silver in the 100-meters (11.28) and bronze in the 200 (22.65). She also ran anchor on the 4x100 relay team that placed tenth in the prelims. Prior to nationals, she clocked the second-fastest time in the world in the 200 (22.32) to set an NCAA Midwest Regional record. The Houston native also won the 100 at Regionals to earn her United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Central Region Female Track Athlete of the Year accolades.
The 2006-07 athletic season marked the fourth time that C-USA has honored Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The award is based solely on athletic achievement during an academic year and the winners are determined through a vote by the league's Directors of Athletics.
