Solares Advances to NCAA Indoor Mile Final

Rice senior Pablo Solares ran 56.8 seconds for the final quarter-mile and finished fourth in his heat at 4:04.09 to qualify for the final of the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Tyson Center. Solares was the final time qualifier, and has a chance Saturday to become the Owls' first-ever indoor all-America in the mile.
Solares, the Conference USA indoor champion and school record-holder at 4:00.82, was sixth after the first quarter-mile at 61.3, and went through the half-mile in fifth at 2:03.5. The Richardson High School product hit the three-quarters mark in fifth at 3:07.2 and joined the mad dash for qualifying spots over the final lap, turning in a 27.3 finishing circuit.
Garrett Heath of Stanford won the heat in 4:03.13, and teammate Russell Brown won the first heat in 4:00.19.
Saturday's final is scheduled to run at 6:25 pm CST, and ESPN360 is presenting live online coverage of the Championships.
