
Owls Win Four Events at Rain-Soaked Bayou Classic

Chandra Ewing had a lifetime best to take gold in the 400-meter hurdles and Rice won four events on the final day of the 25th Victor Lopez Bayou Classic track and field meet Saturday at the Rice Track & Soccer Stadium. Ewing clocked 59.92 as she dipped under 60 seconds for the first time and held off Angel Williams and Britney Orville of Texas.
The meet was delayed two hours due to the storms that rolled through the Houston area throughout the morning.
Also on the track for Rice, Shakera Reece won the 100 in 11.85, while Funmi Jimoh took gold in the 100 hurdles by almost half a second in 13.81. Shardee Caesar was the other individual champion for the Owls, taking top honors in the triple jump by more than two feet with a leap of 12.22 meters/40-0.5.
Naquanza Alfred and freshman Vicki Walker finished 2-3 in the 800 with season bests of 2:11.25 and 2:11.29, and Reece was second in the 200 at 24.15. Jimoh, Reece, Brittany Washington and Desarie Walwyn teamed up to take silver in the 4x100 relay with a 45.96 effort, and the Owls were also second in the 4x400 relay. Eunique Hamilton placed third in the triple jump with a best of 11.45/37-6.75.
Alief Elsik won the girls high school team trophy with 103 points, with Pearland second and Fort Bend Hightower third. Clear Brook's Erica Alexander was a double sprint winner, taking the 100 in 11.87 and setting a meet record with her 23.86 in the 200, breaking a 24-year-old record set by Jocelyn Tatum of Smiley.
Christway Academy eighth-grader Nia Fluker roused the crowd with a wire-to-wire meet record in the 800, clocking 2:11.02 to beat the 1986 mark of 2:11.30 by Kim Widener of Plano.
