
Tulsa Holds On For Win Over Rice, 73-65

Houston - The Tulsa Golden Hurricane outscored Rice 19-4 to open up the second half and held on at the end to win 73-65 in front of 1,831 fans in the last game at Autry Court before July renovations begin.
Rice's Morris Almond scored a game-high 29 points and grabbed team-high 6 rebounds. It was the fifth time this season that Almond, the nation's third-leading scorer had tallied 29 points in a game.
With 29 points, Almond is now fourth all-time at Rice with 1,753 career points surpassing Elbert Darden (1,727). He now has 772 points on the year which is 33 away from tying Ricky Pierce's 1982 record of 805 (30 games).
The 772 season points by Almond is, however, a new Conference USA record for points in a season. The previous mark was 770 set by Cincinnati's Steve Logan in 2002 in 35 games.
Tulsa (19-10, 9-7) took a 24-13 lead to start the contest by hitting 11 of its first 18 shots, while the Owls struggled to convert 4 of 16 field goal attempts (25 percent). Rice freshman Chris Hagan hit a three-pointer to end the half at 32-26 in favor of Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane made 7 of it first 9 field goals in the second half including 3 three-pointers to sport a 51-30 lead with 12:39 left to play.
The Owls did scramble and got back into the game and held Tulsa to without a made field goal for 7 minutes and after Rodney Foster drained a trey, the Owls only down 66-63 with 38 seconds left on the clock. But Rod Earls, Ray Reese, and Charles Ramsdell each made two free throws to put the game away.
Ben Uzoh led Tulsa with 14 points, while Brett McDade added 13. Uzoh went 6-8 from the field. Ramsdell, Darold Crow, and Earls each contributed 9 points.
Chris Hagan scored 8 points off the bench for Rice, which shot 35 percent from the field to Tulsa's 47 percent.
The Owls now prepare for the Conference USA Championship which begins on Wednesday in Memphis, Tenn.
