AUSTIN -- The Texas Longhorns baseball team claimed a 6-4 win over the visiting Rice Owls before a crowd of 5,133 Tuesday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
The Longhorns used the longball to open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rightfielder Kyle Russell led off with a home run to right field, his 16th round-tripper of the season, for a 1-0 advantage.
Rice answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Joe Savery singled up the middle with two away for the Owls first hit of the game. Chad Lembeck followed with a fly ball to the outfield that could have ended the inning, but two fielding errors on the same play allowed both Savery and Lembeck to score. The fly was dropped for one error, then an errant throw into the infield skipped away into UT dugout.
Texas came right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Travis Tucker led off with a single and Chance Wheeless doubled him home to tie the game. A pair of walks loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly by Russell Moldenhauer put Texas back in front 3-2. The Longhorns added two more runs in the sixth on two hits and a fielding error to stretch the margin to 5-2.
The Owls chipped away for a pair of runs in the seventh. Danny Lehmann was hit by a pitch and Chad Lembeck singled to left with one away. Jess Buenger reached on a UT fielding error that allowed Lehmann to come home and send Lembeck to third. Diego Seastrunk drove Lembeck in with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4.
Texas got the run back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by Russell Moldenhauer to make the score 6-4. Savery doubled to start the ninth and Buenger continued the would-be rally with a base hit. UT closer Randy Boone worked out of the jam with no runs allowed for his seventh save of the season.
Rice saw its two-game win streak snapped to fall to 19-10 on the season. Texas improved to 23-9. The Owls next host Marshall in a three-game Conference USA weekend series at Reckling Park starting Friday, March 30. First pitch with the Thundering Herd is slated for 7 pm.
