HOUSTON -- In a match twice delayed due to damp conditions, the No. 62 Rice women fell to No. 60 Florida State 6-1 on Friday afternoon at chilly Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Junior Christine Dao scored the only victory for the Owls with her 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Carolin Walter at No. 2 singles. Freshman Julie Chao challenged 58th-ranked Lauren Macfarlane early at No. 1 singles before the Seminole pulled away in the second frame for a 7-6 (1), 6-3 decision.
Although they lost doubles point, the Owls stayed close in decisions at one and two. Chao and Tiffany Lee traded blows with the 27th-ranked Seminole tandem of Macfarlane and Nicola Slater before succumbing 8-6. At No. 2, Walter and Tapiwa Marobela out-lasted Rice's Dominique Karas and Rebecca Lin 9-7.
The Owls next host No. 75 Auburn on Sunday in a 1 pm match at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
