Rice's James Casey has been named to The Sporting News Freshman All America second team at tight end. Casey was joined on the team by teammate Cheta Ozougwu, who earned honorable mention recognition as a defensive end.
This is the third time this year that Casey has been selected to a freshman All American team. He was tabbed by Rivals.com for its second team, while Scout.com included him on its honorable mention list.
Casey was second on the Owls this past season with 46 catches for 585 yards and four touchdowns. He saw playing time at multiple positions during the year, including quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive end as well as on special teams. He scored five rushing touchdowns in addition to his four TD catches, and he finished third on the team with 54 points.
Ozougwu was second among down linemen with 43 tackles, taking over as a fulltime starter at the beginning of conference action. He teamed with fellow freshman Scott Solomon to give the Owls a pair of freshman starting defensive ends, and both were named the C-USA All Freshman team. Solomon joined Casey on the Scout.com list.
