ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Rice women's basketball team embarks on the 2007-08 season with three games in three days at the Winthrop Classic. The Owls open the tournament against Navy before facing off against North Texas and Winthrop.
Rice is 1-1 in season openers under head coach Greg Williams. After dropping a 110-63 at Mississippi in 2005-06, the Owls rolled past Monmouth 76-45 last season behind Lauren Neaves' 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor. New Jersey native Maudess Fulton added 13 points.

Series History
This weekend marks the first time that Rice squares off with Navy or Winthrop. The Owls are 1-1 all-time against North Texas.
Rice and North Texas have not faced off on the hardwood since the 1989-90 season, a 66-59 Mean Green victory in Denton. Rice claimed a 65-59 win at Autry Court during the 1986-87 campaign.
Last Time Out: Rice 82, HBU 72 (Nov. 1 - Exhibition)
Tiffany Loggins scored a game-high 20 points and added a game-best 11 rebounds as the Rice women's basketball team picked up an 82-72 victory over Houston Baptist in an exhibition game at Sharp Gym on the HBU campus.
The Owls were playing without senior guard Kadie Riverin and senior forward Valeriya Berezhynska.
"We were short-handed with only eight players available," head coach Greg Williams said. "Our team played well but has to work on some things defensively. The four freshmen that played got a baptism of what it's going to be like as we play three games in three days next week."
Maudess Fulton and Tara Watts added 18 points apiece. Fulton scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half, while Watts connected on 4-of-5 from three-point range.
Morgan Mayse tallied 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds in her first collegiate action. Shyrelle Horne grabbed 10 rebounds and passed out a game-high seven assists.
