Rice junior QB Chase Clement, who accounted for a C-USA-record eight touchdowns (six passing, two rushing) in the Owls come-from-behind win over UTEP on Saturday, has been named the Conference USA co-Offensive Player of the Week . Clement shares this week's honor with East Carolina senior RB Chris Johnson, who ran for 301 yards and four touchdowns in the Pirates win at Memphis.
Defensive honors went to Houston junior DE Phillip Hunt, while Southern Miss freshman K Justin Estes earned special teams recognition after booting three field goals of 40 yards or longer.
Clement set Rice records with 498 yards of total offense (395 passing and 103 rushing), six touchdown passes and eight total touchdowns, while leading the Owls to 28 fourth-quarter points and a come-from-behind 56-48 victory over UTEP. The eight total touchdowns that he was responsible for are also a new Conference USA record. Clement set additional career highs for passing yards, attempts (58) and completions (32) and became the first Owl to surpass 5,000 yards in total offense in his first three seasons.
This is the second time Clement has been honored by the conference in his career. He earned the weekly honor as a sophomore after throwing for 299 yards and five TD passes against Army. He is the second Owl to be honored this season. Andrew Sendejo earned the defensive weekly honor after his effort against Southern Miss.
