Massengale Wins 500-Freestyle At NIKE Cup

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Senior Brittany Massengale won the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA provisional qualifyng time of 4:51.20 on the first day of competition at the prestigious NIKE Cup Thursday evening at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach Calif.
After five events the Owls are in fourth place among the massive 19-team field. The three-day event concludes on Saturday evening.
Massengale was joined by a host of Owls who stepped-up with their best performances of the early season. Junior Caitlin Warner swam a career-best 4:57.79 to take 10th in the 500 while true freshman Karen Gerken clocked a season-best 5:06.04 for 16th.
Sophomore Pam Zelnick swam a career-best 23.98 to take 12th in the 50-freestyle. Junior Carlyann Miller was 13th with a time of 24.00.
The Rice foursome of Keri Hyde, Zelnick, Angela Wo and Miller finished second in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:50.96. The same group, only this time with junior sprinter Diane Gu on the third leg, took third in the 200-freestyle relay with a season-best time of 1:35.44.
