Rice free safety Andrew Sendejo has been named Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Owls 31-29 win at Southern Miss last Wednesday night.
The sophomore from Canyon Lake became the first Owl in seven years to record multiple interceptions in the same game, picking off a pair of passes against the Golden Eagles, breaking up a third pass and tying for second on the squad with seven tackles.
He also forced a fumble to personally account for three of the seven turnovers the Owls created on the evening. The seven turnovers were the most for a Rice squad since 1993 when they forced eight turnovers against Houston in a 37-7 win. Sendejo lead the team with three interceptions this year, the most by an Owl since Terry Holley had three in 2004.
Sendejo, who earned first-team all freshman honors last year, is the first Owl to earn a C-USA honor in football this season.
