HOUSTON -- Five members of the No. 7 Rice squad joined forces to win the inaugural HBU/Puma Cross Country Classic held on the Houston Baptist University campus Friday night.

Sophomore Claire Shorall (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led a 3-4-5-7 overall finish as the Owls scored 22 points, 11 ahead of the host Huskies. Shorall completed the 4000-meter course in 15:04. She was closely followed by junior Lea Garcia (St. Louis, Mo.), who was three seconds behind her teammate. Freshman Frances Kellerman (Baltimore, Md.) finished in 15:14, while senior Jessica Cox (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) posted a 15:28. Freshman Vicki Walker (A&M Consolidated) closed out the Owls' scoring with her 13th overall finish in 16:20.

The rest of the Owls will face off against 11 ranked teams as they compete on Saturday morning at the Pre-Nationals meet hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind.
