BATON ROUGE, La. -- Rice distance swimmers Brittany Massengale and Caitlin Warner posted a 1-2 finish, respectively, in the 1,000-yard freestyle and sophomore sprinter Carlyann Miller came from behind for a victory in the 200-freestyle on the first day of competition of the LSU quad meet Friday evening in Baton Rouge, La.
The individual wins, along with a total of four second place finishes by the Owls, give Rice the lead at the halfway point in two of the three dual meets being held simultaneously at the LSU Natatorium. The Blue & Gray hold a comfortable 131-35 lead on the University of New Orleans and a 106-87 advantage over crosstown rival Houston. Rice trails meet host LSU 133-66 heading into Saturday's second half of the two-day competition.
Massengale and Warner were sound and solid in recording their best times of the season for the 1-2 finish in the rugged 1,000. Massengale registered a winning time of 10:09.12. Warner swam a career-best 10:11.44 for second place, highlighted by a 5:04.99 in her second half of the race that was faster than her first half (5:06.45). The Rice duo weren't the only Owl distance specialists with success Friday. Freshman Stephanie Eberhardt also posted a career-best 10:29.19 to take fifth place and help the team score big with three of the event's top-five spots.
Miller made it back-to-back Rice wins in consecutive events with her victory in the 200-free. The standout from Fort Gibson, Okla., was just off the lead at the race's three-quarter mark, but rallied over the final 50 yards for a winning time of 1:51.86. Miller also swam the lead leg of the Owls' 400-freestyle relay that finished second with a time of 3:31.77.
Rice's 200-medley relay finished second with a time of 1:48.80. Junior Jennifer Hill scored big for the team with a second place in the 200-individual medley (2:08.51), as well as a third place finish in her first attempt to race in the 200-breaststroke (2:25.16) this season.
The meet concludes Saturday with eight more events. Start time is slated for 11 am. A full listing of Friday's results are available at the above link.
