Corpus Christi -
Marissa Daniels won her second race of the season, and Callie Wells and Nicole Mericle finished second and third to lead Rice's women's cross country team to a convincing win over Big 12 power Texas Friday at the 7th Annual Islander Splash at West Guth Park.
The Owls scored 17 points, only two points off a perfect score, while the Lady Longhorns were second with 60 points. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished third with 76.
"We ran a better race today than we did last week at Minnesota," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "We ran well as a pack and it was great to have five of the top six individual finishers. Texas is a tough team, and this was a good chance to test ourselves against them."
Daniels, who won the Rice Invitational three weeks ago to open the season, cruised to a 17:05 clocking over the flat five-kilometer course, 31 seconds ahead of Wells. Mericle finished at 17:58, with Lennie Waite fifth at 18:18 and Laura Kelley sixth at 18:27.
Other finishers for the Owls were Susie Barrows (10th in 18:38), Lea Garcia (15th in 18:58), Britany Williams (18th in 19:08), Claire Shorall (24th in 19:45) and Amanda Reineck (29th in 20:02).
Rice will next run at the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 14.
