San Antonio -
Senior Pablo Solares was the top collegiate finisher and teammates Simon Bucknell and Brett Olson went 2-4 to help Rice to a dominant win at UTSA's Ricardo Romo Invitational cross country meet Friday. The Owls scored 20 points to capture team honors ahead of the hosts, who scored 48.
Former Owl star Marcel Hewamudalige, running unattached, won the five-kilometer race with a time of 14:34, with Solares crossing the line behind him at 15:07. Bucknell clocked 15:13 and Olson 15:28 on the course at Brooks City Base Golf Course.
"This was a very satisfying win," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "The team has been battling illness and injury since our season opener two weeks ago, and we managed a very solid finish without Charles Hampton, one of our top runners."
Justin Maxwell added a sixth-place effort for the Owls, one spot ahead of Aaron Robson, and Colby Keithan and Scott Zivick were eighth and 10th, respectively. Rounding out the Rice finishers were Alex Solomon (11th), Brad Morris (14th), John Buck (16th) and Andrew Zukoski (17th).
Rice will return to action in two weeks at the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe.
