Tempe, Ariz. -
Pablo Solares finished second and Aaron Robson was tenth to help lead Rice to a second-place team finish Saturday at the Arizona State Invitational. The Owls beat host ASU and Northern Arizona without the services of two of their top runners, Simon Bucknell and Charles Hampton, while Arizona won the team title.
"We ran pretty well in spots today," said head coach Jon Warren. "Pablo ran a really strong race, and had a nice finish after a slow first three miles, and it was good to see Aaron in the top 10. Now we need to work on our pack being closer to our front runners."
Solares clocked 24:40 over the eight-kilometer course to finish as runner-up behind Arizona's 2005 Pac-10 champion and NCAA 10th-placer, Robert Cheseret, who won in 24:24. Robson crossed the line at 25:25. Other scorers for the Owls were Brad Morris (23rd at 26:04), Justin Maxwell (27th at 26:16) and Scott Zivick (28th at 26:18). Alex Solomon was 31st at 26:25, John Buck was 38th at 26:44, Brett Olson was 41st at 26:52 and Andrew Zukoski was 45th at 27:01 to round out the Rice finishers.
The Owls' next meet will be Oct. 28 at the Conference USA Championships in Greenville, N.C.
