WACO, Texas -- The Rice women's tennis team closed out its first tournament of the year on Sunday at the Baylor Fall Invitational in Waco, finishing the weekend with a combined 17-9 singles record.
On the final day of action, junior Tiffany Lee was swept in the Green Flight championship match by SMU's Claire Rietsch 6-3, 6-2. Also in main draw action, the Owls' tandem of Lee and junior Kimberley Patenaude fell to the doubles Green Flight top-seeded pair of Kate Purice and Christi Baxley of Oklahoma, 8-4, in the semifinals.
In the doubles White Flight consolation draw, Rice's duo of junior Emily Braid and freshman Rebecca Lin blasted the mixed pair of Baylor's Sammi Gottlich and Lamar's Manami Kuroda 8-1 in the semifinals. In the finals though, the Owls fell to the draw's top-seeded tandem from OU, Rachel Cox and Brittany Baldy, 8-6.
"This was a good start to the season for everyone and one of the best starts we're had since I've been here," noted head coach Roger White. "It was also a good showing by the two freshman (Lin and Julie Chao) in their first collegiate tournament and against quality opponents."
Coming up on Sept. 30, Chao and sophomore Alanna Rodgers will represent Rice in doubles at the 2006 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Presented by Fila. Playing in Pacific Palisades, Calif., the pair will take the court in the prequalifying round to vie for a chance to advance to the main draw.
The whole team returns to action Oct. 6-8 when the Owls host the Rice Tennis Classic at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
