Owls Open Fall Season at Baylor

HOUSTON -- Tiffany Lee and Alanna Rodgers led the Owls as the Rice women's tennis team hit the courts for the first time this season at the Baylor Fall Invitational in Waco.
Both Lee and Rodgers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Green Flight in singles. Rodgers, a sophomore, scored a straight-set victory over Texas Tech's Anne Sophie Fankam, winning 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32. She followed that with a big rally against Abilene Christian's Meagan Brown for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 win. Lee, a junior and seeded third in the draw, received a first round bye. In the round of 16, she swept the Red Raiders' Samantha van der Drift 6-3, 7-5.
Making their collegiate debuts at Rice, freshmen Rebecca Lin and Julie Chao both had tough first-round losses then rebounded with straight-set wins in the consolation draws. Playing in the Gold Flight, Chao fell to fourth-seeded Anna Sydorska of TCU 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (5), then rebounded to beat Conference USA foe Pavi Francis of SMU 7-5, 6-3. Lin played in the Green Flight, falling to ACU's Aina Rafolomanantsiatosika 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (7). She then rallied to beat UT-Arlington's Daniela Novakova 6-4, 6-3.
Lee teamed with classmate Kimberley Patenaude in doubles to beat Wyoming's Michelle Brown and Amy Senko 8-4 in the first round of Green Flight. Only one round of doubles was played on Friday.
Tournament action continues in Waco through Sunday.
