HOUSTON -- Rice's incoming freshman class of Rebecca Lin and Julie Chao rated No. 2 in a poll ranking "mid-major" schools, while in a media poll, the class ranked 24th nationally across all universities, according to TennisRecruiting.net, which conducted both polls.
In the national poll, Rice joined Texas (15th) as the only programs from the state to be ranked in the top 25. The Owls were also the only Conference USA team to be recognized.
The mid-major ranking includes all colleges in all divisions except for those in "major conferences," defined by TennisRecruiting.net as schools affiliated with the Bowl Championship series, as well as the Ivy League. Rice was second in the ranking, behind only Williams and Mary, which also placed second in the national media poll. The Owls were the top C-USA team in the poll, with long-time rival SMU coming in at No. 4.
The pair of new Owls both hail from San Diego, Calif., with Chao graduating from Westview High School and Lin from Torrey Pines High School this past spring. Classes begin at Rice on Aug. 28 and the Owls take to the courts for the first time at the St. Mary's Fall Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., Sept. 15-18.
