HOUSTON -- Rice was tabbed the seventh seed for the 2006 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship and face off with Southern Miss in the first round of the 11-team tournament on Thursday at 2 pm, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The Owls have weathered a demanding schedule this spring that included 13 ranked foes with six in the top 20. Led by 69th-ranked senior Blair DiSesa, the only ranked singles player in C-USA with her 21-14, Rice has posted a 9-12 ledger this season and split a pair of close decisions in its only league matches of the year. The top-seeded Mustangs slipped past the Owls 4-3 on March 24, then the Owls rebounded to beat fifth-seeded Tulsa 4-3 the next day.
In addition to DiSesa's success, Rice has three other players to win 20 or more wins this year: sophomore Christine Dao (21), senior Medeja Egic (20) and sophomore Tiffany Lee (20).
SMU garnered the tournament's top seed with the team's national ranking of 51. Second-seeded Marshall is right behind the Mustangs nationally, checking in at 55th. Rice's cross-town rival Houston received the three seed, and UAB enters the championship as the four seed.
A first-round win would send the Owls to face the Thundering Herd on Friday at 2 pm. The semifinals are slated for Saturday with the championship match set for 10 am on Sunday.
