DuPont, LaBarge, Loftin Receive Top Academic Award

HOUSTON - Seniors Catherine DuPont of the basketball team, Parker LaBarge of the golf team and Scott Loftin of the men's cross country team were honored with the Dr. Hubert E. Bray Scholar-Athlete Award as 120 Rice student-athletes were recognized on Sunday for their academic success over the past year at the 20th annual Rice scholar-athlete banquet.
The Dr. Hubert E. Bray Scholar-Athlete Award is presented annually to the Rice male and female student-athletes with the top grade point average. DuPont, also a four-year letterwinner on the volleyball team, is majoring in kinesiology and psychology. The men's honor was shared by LaBarge, a kinesiology and visual arts double major, and Loftin, a kinesiology, policy studies and religious studies triple major.
Eighteen student-athletes received Rice University Scholar Athlete awards, which honor the contributing member of each Rice University intercollegiate team with the highest GPA on his or her team. The 2006 Rice University Scholar Athletes are: Jessica Cox (women's cross country), Malin Fuglesang (women's cross country), Erin Droeger (soccer), Laura Healey (swimming), Blair DiSesa (women's tennis), Sarah Yoder (women's track & field), Susan Barrow (women's track & field), Olaya Pazo (volleyball), Edward Degerman (baseball), Arthur Culver (men's basketball), John Syptak (football), Tony Haerle (men's tennis), Bahnsen Miller (men's track & field), and Brooke Eitelbach and William Miller (managers & trainers). DuPont, LaBarge and Loftin all won the scholar-athlete awards for their sports.
Additionally, 102 student-athletes, including student managers and trainers, were given Honor Athlete awards for carrying a 2.9 or better GPA. To receive any of the awards, the recipients must be a third, fourth or fifth-year student-athlete.
