Houston -
Emery Carter made the most of her first career start Monday, scoring on the first play of the game and finishing with a career-high 20 points to lead Rice past Sam Houston State 91-48 at Autry Court. The Owls dominated on both ends of the floor, shooting 53.5 percent from the field and grabbing 18 steals as they moved to 4-2 on the year. Sam Houston (3-3) shot only 25.8 percent in the face of a dogged Rice defensive effort, and the Bearkats turned the ball over 31 times.
Carter took the opening tip from Lauren Neaves and converted an easy layup, and Rice ran to an 11-2 lead with 15:56 to go. Sam Houston got within five a minute later on a Morgan Collom bucket, but that was as close as the 'Kats would get.
Rice steadily increased its lead, putting together a 16-0 run to go up 40-11 with 4:40 left, and another Carter layup sent the Owls into the half with a 52-17 lead.
Carter scored twice more to open the second half, and a Maudess Fulton layup with 11:05 left gave the Owls a 50-point edge at 72-22. Sam Houston made an 8-0 run late in the second half to cut the margin to 39 at 78-39, but Rice's continued aggressive defense and opportunistic offense carried the Owls down the stretch to their second-highest point total of the season.
Neaves and Valeriya Berezhynska scored 15 points each in the winning effort, and Neaves blocked four shots. Britney Harris led Sam Houston with 11 points.
The Owls return to action Friday at 7 pm, hosting 10th-ranked Texas A&M at Autry Court.
