Owls Knocked Out of Main Draw at ITA Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Junior Christine Dao led Rice with one upset on Saturday, but she couldn't pull off a second against the top seeded player as the Owls wrapped up play in main draw competition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional Championships in Fort Worth.
Dao began the day by beating ninth-seeded Sarah Foster of SMU 6-0, 0-6, 6-2. Her reward for the upset in the round of 32 was a meeting with top seeded, and 14th ranked, Zuzana Cerna of Baylor in the round of 16. The Bear recorded her third consecutive straight-set win against the Owl, 6-0, 6-4.
Also facing tough challenges on Saturday in the round of 32 were freshmen Julie Chao and Rebecca Lin. Chao lost to Iva Mihaylova, the No. 10 seed from Baylor, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Lin took the opening set from fourth-seeded Petra Dizdar of Texas, but lost her upset bid 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Tiffany Lee also faced a seeded foe in the round, falling to No. 14 Natalia Bubien of SMU.
Chao, Lin and Lee all rebounded in consolation draw action with wins and continue singles play on Sunday.
Chao and Lee also came just short of a trip to the main draw doubles quarterfinals, falling 9-8 to Texas A&M's Anna Blagodarova and Marisa Druss.
Tournament action continues in Fort Worth through Monday.
