Quartet Advances in Singles at ITA Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Rice juniors Christine Dao and Tiffany Lee and freshmen Rebecca Lin and Julie Chao were all impressive in Friday's opening round of the main singles draw, sweeping their foes at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Region Championships in Fort Worth.
Dao and Lin both scored victories against players from Houston. Dao beat the Cougars' Sonja Nikolic 6-1, 6-2 while Lin defeated Rebecca Franzi 6-4, 6-0. Lee downed Texas Tech's Lakann Wagley 6-4, 6-1, and Chao won 6-3, 6-3 against Bonnie Phillips of Southeastern Louisiana.
The quartet advance to Saturday's round of 32 action. Two rounds of singles are slated for Saturday.
In doubles action, Chao and Lee paired for an 8-5 victory over the Red Raiders' Brenna Jackson and Samantha Vander Drift. The 10th-seeded Rice tandem faces Anna Biagodarova and Marisa Druss of Texas A&M on Saturday in the round of 16. The Aggies upset the tournament's No. 5 pair from Baylor on Friday to advance.
