Marissa Daniels finished 40th individually and Rice placed 23rd with 615 points in a 37-team race Saturday at the Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind. The event featured many of the nation's top collegiate teams, split into two sections -- the "Blue" race and the "White" race. The Owls competed in the "White" section, which was won by North Carolina State with 117 points.
Daniels completed the six-kilometer course in 21:00 to finish 40th, while Callie Wells was the next Rice placer at 21:52 in 114th. Freshman Nicole Mericle finished 138th in 22:05, followed by Susie Barrows (143rd in 22:08), Lennie Waite (180th in 22:29), Laura Kelley (194th in 22:37) and Lea Garcia (222nd in 23:02). Julia Lucas of North Carolina State won the 253-person race in 20:02.
The Owls travel to Greenville, N.C., in two weeks for the Conference USA championships. Rice won the school's first-ever C-USA title in any sport last year at Orlando, Fla.
