MIDLAND, Texas -- The women's tennis team battled through a tough first day at the Midland Collegiate Invitational on Friday in Midland, Texas.
In singles action, the trio of Christine Dao, Tiffany Lee and Julie Chao each scored straight-set victories in the first round of the 32-person draw. Dao defeated Pepperdine's Tania Rice 6-2, 6-3, and Lee beat LSU's Hannah Robinson 6-1, 6-3. Chao had the most commanding win of the day with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph against Texas-Arlington's Sara Pesic.
The Owls had a tougher challenge in the second round. Lee fell to the tournament's top seed Sylvia Kosakowski of Pepperdine, who is ranked 46th nationally, 6-3, 6-2. Chao challenged 67th-ranked Ashley Joelson of UCLA, but the Bruin held off the upset bid, taking a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 decision.
In doubles, Lee and Chao teamed up to beat Southern Cal's pair of Anca Anastasiu and Judy DeVera 9-8 (5).
Tournament action continues through Sunday.
