Albuquerque, N.M. -
Zia Classic Pentathlon Results
Rice senior Funmi Jimoh scored 3,625 points to place third in her indoor pentathlon debut at the Zia Classic Multis Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Ryanne Dupree of Texas-San Antonio won the five-event competition with 4,035 points, the best score by an American this season.
Jimoh clocked 8.53 seconds for the 60-meter hurdles, matching the fastest time of the day by Dupree, and followed up with a 1.69m/5-6.5 clearance in the high jump. She threw the shot put 10.11m/33-2, followed by a disappointing 5.74m/18-10 leap in the long jump. In the 800, Jimoh felt the effects of Albuquerque's altitude, stopping the clock at 2:49.90.
"This was Funmi's first pentathlon in her life," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "She had a solid hurdles race and her shot put was better. We just need to keep working on her bread-and-butter events [high jump and long jump] and she will score much higher."
The Owls return to action Feb. 4 at the University of Houston Invitational at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
