Rice Splits Double-Dual Meet With Houston, LSU

HOUSTON - Rice sophomore Brittany Massengale won the 500-yard freestyle to help lead the Owls' swim team to a spilt in the final meet scores after Saturday's final round of action in the double-dual with LSU and Houston across town at UH recreation center natatorium. Rice defeated Houston 202-145 and fell to LSU 196-151. The Owls are now 5-3 in dual meets heading into their final meet of the regular season, a showdown with longtime conference rival SMU at home at the Rice Pool on Jan. 20 (Friday).
Massengale led a 1-2-3-4 Rice sweep in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.23. The next three Owls, freshmen Carlyann Miller (4:58.69) and Caitlin Warner (5:00.33) followed by sophomore Carey Hain (5:00.94), all registered their best times of the season as the Blue and Gray built on a lead it amassed after Friday's first half of the meet.
Rice was able to hold the Cougars in check, but LSU made a run to regain the lead with finishes ahead of the Owls in the next six events. Three were by the narrowest of margins, including .03 seconds in the 400-individual medley, .04 in the 200-backstroke and .24 in the 100-freestyle. Rice dropped the meet points for three events by a combined total of just under one-third of a second (.31).
Both of the Owls' relay teams in the 400-medley (3:53.37) and 200-freestyle (1:34.25) logged season-best times. Freshman Natalie Kirchhoff posted a career-best in the 200-butterfly (2:07.74) for the third meet in a row. Freshman Anna Dogger had her best swim of the year in the 100-free (54.36).
Rice closes out its 2006 dual meet meet at home on Friday.Start time against the SMU Mustangs is slated for 6 pm at the Rice Pool.
