Marissa Daniels placed 15th overall to help the Rice women's cross country team to a 13th-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday.
Daniels, a sophomore from Pearland who qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman, covered the five-kilometer course in 17:28. The Owls scored 334 points to beat 11 other teams, including Conference USA rivals UAB. Michigan won the team title with 77 points, and Stephanie Madia won individual top honors for the host school in 16:36.
"Marissa ran a very strong race," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "This was a great and deep field, with lots of the people who should be at nationals later this season."
Kate Gorry, the 2004 WAC champion, was 41st for the Owls in 17:46, with Anna Reeve (84th in 18:19), Callie Wells (86th in 18:20), and Laura Kelley (115th in 18:40) rounding out the scorers for Rice.
The Owls return to competition on Oct. 15 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
