HOUSTON - Sophomore Katlyn Ferguson came off the bench to record only the second hat trick in school history as the Rice soccer team rolled to an impressive 12-0 win over crosstown foe Texas Southern Thursday evening at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
The Owls scored in the first minute of the game and proceeded to add seven more goals in the first half to build an 8-0 advantage. After another four goals in the second half, Rice was on its way to its second-largest margin of victory in school history. The Blue and Gray also set new single-game records for assists (10) and shots (62).
With a comfortable lead in the early going, Rice emptied its bench to get 20 different players into the game. The Owls rotated three different goalkeepers and played a total of seven freshman, most of them simultaneously 20 minutes into the first period. A pair of freshmen, Caitlin Robbins and Ashley Lucas, both finished with two goals each while combining for 16 shots. Freshman Anne Candee set a new Rice single-game record with three assists before closing out the scoring with a goal of her own.
Sophomore Samantha Conn scored the first goal of the game 59 seconds into the contest. She would go on to add another two assists in the game. Junior Maria Fadool, sophomore Traci Fraser and freshman Alison Wittig rounded out the 12-goal explosion. Senior team captain Erin Droeger, an all-conference defender for the Owls a year ago, did not play in the game. Texas Southern did not record a shot on goal. Rice improved to 2-1. Texas Southern fell to 0-1-0 in its season opener.
"I wanted to see effort from everyone who got in the game," said Rice head coach Chris Huston. "One of the things (the coaches) told the team after our last game was always stay focused on giving your best effort and competing the entire game.
"We now have to get ready for Texas State," Huston added. "They're always dangerous and we've never beaten them here at home."
The Owls continue their season-opening five-game homestand with a match against Texas State on Sunday. Start time with the Bobcats will be 1 pm at the Rice Track'Soccer Stadium.
