HOUSTON -- Junior defensive end John Syptak is one of two Conference USA players to be named to the 24-man watch list for the 2005 Hendricks Award, given to the nation's top defensive end.
Syptak, from Bellville (High), led the Owls with 15 tackles for a loss and eight sacks as a junior in 2004, winning all-Western Athletic Conference honors. He also registered 69 tackles, including 40 solo stops.
Also named was UTEP junior Alex Obomese. Obomese recorded 36 tackles as a sophomore, including seven for a loss and 4.5 sacks.
On field performance, leadership abilities and contributions to school and community are some of the criteria that are used to determine the award's winner. Candidates may represent any class (freshman through senior) as well as any recognized four-year NCAA accredited school. The candidate's primary position must be defensive end.
During its inaugural year of 2002, the Hendricks Award was presented to Terrell Suggs (ASU, Ravens and NFL Rookie of the Year standout). The 2003 and 2004 Hendricks Award went to David Pollack of the University of Georgia and first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals.
This award is named in honor of former University of Miami three-time All-America and NFL Hall of Famer Ted Hendricks. The Hendricks Foundation provides assistance to local and national charities through awards, grants and scholarship programs aimed at health, educational and recreational programs for youth and seniors.
