HOUSTON -- Kim Austin has been named an assistant coach for the Rice women's basketball program, new head coach Greg Williams announced Monday, rounding out the Owls' coaching staff for the 2005-06 season.
Austin spent last season as an assistant on the sidelines for Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga. With the Lady Hornets of the NAIA, she was charged with coaching the post players in addition to serving as recruiting coordinator, scheduling coordinator and supervisor for weight training and conditioning.
"I am happy to add Kim to our staff," said Williams. "She is a quality person who will bring a lot of enthusiasm and energy to our program. She will work with our perimeter players as well as being an integral part of our recruiting efforts."
Prior to working with Southern Poly, Austin spent one year as an assistant with Life University, also in Marietta, Ga, after a two-year stint with Saint Louis University. She organized team travel, coordinated the film exchange and aided in recruiting in addition to her on-court coaching duties with both programs.
"I'm enthusiastic about being an Owl," Austin said. "Getting the opportunity to work with my former coach (Williams) and coming back to my home state of Texas is truly great."
Austin is a 1998 graduate of Colorado State with a B.A. in social sciences and a minor in sociology. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Rams, helping them to the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles, then the program's first NCAA tournament bid in 1996. As a senior captain, Austin led Colorado State to the WAC Mountain Division title and a trip to the NCAA tournament second round in 1998.
