Milwaukee, Wisc. -
Marquette had four players score in double figures and dominated the boards to notch an 82-57 win over Rice Friday at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles held Rice to 37.5 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded the Owls 43-29 to improve to 10-1 on the year, while Rice dropped to 4-6 overall.
"Nothing went very well tonight," said Rice head coach Greg Williams. "There was no intensity from our players, and we again shot very poorly and missed some good opportunities. We will simply have to play much better to win some games."
Marquette led 39-26 at the half, going on a 27-13 run after Catherine DuPont gave the Owls their final lead of the game at 13-12 with 10:29 left in the first half.
Kadie Riverin's three-pointer and a Lauren Neaves tip-in to open the second half cut Marquette's lead to 39-31 with 19:08 remaining in the game, but the Golden Eagles went on a 17-2 run over the next five minutes to put away the game. They stretched the lead to as many as 28 points as they extended their winning streak to eight games.
Jasmine McCullough led all scorers with 18 points for Marquette, and also hauled down a game-high nine rebounds. Danielle Kamm added 14 points and nine boards, while Christina Quaye chipped in 13 points and Svetlana Kovalenko had 10. Carolyn Kieger, the Big East leader in assists, had nine on the night and popped in nine points.
Three players scored eight points each to lead Rice -- Neaves, DuPont and Tiffany Loggins -- and Neaves had six rebounds to lead the Owls. DuPont blocked a game-high three shots.
Rice plays at Texas A&M on Jan. 2, before opening Conference USA play at home on Jan. 6 against Southern Miss.
